S.D. Sights: Landing at Lindbergh

P271

A United Airlines jet glides over Point Loma Saturday evening before landing at San Diego International Airport. Usually, when jets land at Lindbergh Field they fly into the airport from the east, flying over Bankers Hill, and takeoff to the west, flying over Point Loma. It's unusual to see them fly into San Diego from the west.

California's First Mission

Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcalá, founded in 1769, was California's first Franciscan mission. It also was the first European settlement in what is now America's most populous, most diverse and richest state.

The Mission was established on a hill at the western end of La Cañada de San Diego, a river valley. In 1774, it was moved upriver about six miles from present-day Presidio Park to its current location at 10818 San Diego Mission Road. In the 1860s, the valley was renamed Mission Valley.

The Mission has been ruled by three countries, Spain, Mexico and the United States. When President Lincoln restored ownership of the Mission to the Roman Catholic Church in 1862, it was in ruins. Restoration began in the 1880s. The church seen in these photos is the fourth one at the Mission's present location, according to Wikipedia.

Pope Paul VI designated the church as a minor basilica in 1976. Today, the Mission is an active Catholic Parish in the Diocese of San Diego. During the week, Mass is held at 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. daily. Saturday Mass is at 5:30 p.m. Sunday Masses begin at 7 a.m.

Apple prepares for a crowd

Apple is getting ready for tomorrow's 8 a.m. release of the new iPad.

At the Fashion Valley Mall in Mission Valley, Apple has set up several areas for people to wait in line. In the past, the line of people has stretched well past Bloomingdale's.

The Apple Store will open Friday morning at 8 a.m. The mall opens at 5 a.m., which is when people are expected to start forming a line.
